Credit bureaus in Colombia: what they are and how they work

4 min readM8

When you apply for a loan, a rental, or even some jobs, the first thing they do is check a credit bureau. In Colombia, three operate: DataCrédito Experian, TransUnion (formerly CIFIN), and Procrédito. These entities store your financial history — on-time payments, delinquencies, balances, active products — and sell it to financial institutions to evaluate your profile. Knowing what is in that history and how to manage it is fundamental.

What information they store about you

The bureaus store: all your active and closed financial products (cards, loans, CDs, payroll-deducted loans), the payment history of each (on time, X days late, in legal collection), current balances, available vs. used credit limit on cards, and the queries made on your history. They may also include past-due utility bills, telecommunications debts, and in some cases rental history. This builds what is called your "credit history."

How long the information remains

Here is the part many people do not know: according to Law 1266 of 2008 (the Habeas Data Law), a delinquency you pay stays in the system for twice the time the delinquency lasted, up to a maximum of 4 years. If you were 3 months late and pay, it will appear for 6 more months. If you were 2 years late and pay, it stays for 4 additional years. Debts you never paid remain for 10 years from the date the obligation originated. There is no way to erase true negative information before those deadlines.

How to check your own history

You have a legal right to check your credit history for free. At DataCrédito: go to app.midatacredito.com and register. The free plan gives you access to the basic report once a month. At TransUnion: use transunion.com.co with the same details. You can also make written requests directly to the bureaus. If you find incorrect information (a delinquency you paid that does not show as current, or a product you do not recognize), you can file a formal complaint and they have 15 business days to respond.

How Crenti uses this information

With your consent, Crenti consolidates your information from the credit bureaus and shows you a diagnosis in plain language: what is going well, what is affecting your score, and what concrete actions you can take to improve. Instead of having to interpret a technical report, you see exactly which products you have, how they are affecting you, and which financial products you could access today given your profile.
